As reported by Greenville Online a recent fire in an apartment in Greenville, South Carolina significantly damaged a building. Sources believe that the damage was so severe because there was no sprinkler system installed.
The fire devastated eight units in an apartment building in South Carolina. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined but suspicious activity is suspected.
Much of the building is damaged but thankfully no one was hurt, however, it took over 35 firefighters to put out the blaze.
Greenville County Spokesman, Bob Mihalic, explained that apartments built in Greenville before 2000 are not required to have sprinkler systems. New construction regulations do require sprinkler systems to be installed, however the apartment complex where the fire occurred was likely built in the seventies.
Steve Whitman, fire marshal for the city of Greenville, explained that sprinkler systems can make all the difference in an apartment fire. Even with just a few sprinklers activated, a fire can be successfully contained to the unit where it originated, and not affect neighboring units.
The community of Greenville is pulling together to help the families who were affected by this terrible fire after losing all of their possessions. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
If you own a home or a residential building, and have the ability to install a sprinkler system, we highly recommend doing so. A sprinkler system can prevent, and put out, fires.
